Announcing MAJOR! to the People!
MAJOR! chronicles the life and campaigns of Miss Major Griffin-Gracy, a 75 year old Black transgender elder and activist who has been fighting for the rights of trans women of color for over 40 years.
In 2016, MAJOR! was shown at over 60 film festivals around the world and garnered 19 awards for best documentary. Miss Major’s story offers us a roadmap for liberation, and we’re excited to announce our MAJOR! to the People campaign to bring the film free of charge to community-based organizations working for social justice.
Our priority is to connect QTPOC communities and especially trans women of color around the United States and internationally with Miss Major’s story of resilience and resistance, and we’re seeking partnerships with community-based organizations working for social justice to help us make this happen.
In exchange for free access to the film and a donated copy for your organization, we’re asking that you work to make your screening accessible and provide an opportunity to connect your viewing audience with local resources and services. This could include screenings at community centers, local theaters, or meeting spaces, as well as living room screenings to build social support. You can focus on just your membership, use the screening to help build your membership, or host a screening open to the public, as long as it’s free and accessible.
We currently have digital downloads available with English, Spanish, or French subtitles. Our packaged DVD will be available in mid-March and will contain both subtitles and closed caption options.
Priority will be given to organizations led by and/or serving Queer and Trans People of Color (QTPOC) and especially Trans Women of Color (TWOC).
To qualify, your group must be one or more of the following:
PLEASE NOTE: CAMPUS GROUPS, UNIVERSITY DEPARTMENTS, AND ORGANIZATIONS AFFILIATED WITH HIGHER LEARNING INSTITUTIONS are not eligible for this program. Please apply instead for our community partnership program connected to educational sales, contact us for details.
The MAJOR! to the People program is made possible with the support of the Arcus Foundation.
